J Beans - Creative Loafing Article
Here is the story Creative Loafing just published on J beans. Beans is a great MC, performer and friend....
"Like every artist, Jason "J Beans" Hall found himself traveling down an uncompromising path in search of his voice. Until, that is, he stumbled upon a split in the road. Rather than steer clear of the fork, he took both. Now he uses the resulting dual personas - J Beans and alter ego J Bless - to reveal his full story on the new mixtape, One Man, Two Sounds.
Born in Brooklyn, raised in Jamaica and educated at Atlanta's Emory University, Hall lyrically represents equal parts street hustler and hip-hop philosopher. Complemented by the reggae-inspired hooks he channels for the first time as J Bless, his newfound range is as broad as his message. Had it not been for a recent tragedy, however, he might still be harboring that inner voice in total silence.
In 2005, Beans began fronting the Atlanta-based hip-hop band, Haze. Two years later, after the group disintegrated, Beans teamed up with old friend and local rapper Charles "CG" Price to form the Disciples. A relentless mixtape hustle earned them street love and heavy spins at local strip clubs. Within a year, they were inducted into radio hosts the Durty Boyz' Hall of Fame on Hot 107.9’s “Battlegrounds” (WHTA-FM).
But the future turned surprisingly sour last November when CG was fatally stabbed in Chicago, while visiting his family over Thanksgiving. The devastating loss made Beans reevaluate the course his life and art were taking.
Heartbroken, J Beans thought about putting down the mic, but decided instead to take his musical mission in a different direction. "The Disciples music was special to me, but it was mostly stories of hood life," admits J Beans. "I kinda felt like I was putting myself in a box that I didn't even need to be in. I was lucky enough to go to school and see a lot of things, and at times my story got lost."
His new mixtape resolves that. With seven past Disciples tracks he pays homage to the memory of CG, while seven new J Beans/J Bless tracks — including the SMKA-produced "I've Been Drinking" — thoughtfully cover his storied past and a hopeful future."

Rich Kids - "Wasup" = My Guilty Pleasure
So I probably shouldn't like this, matter of fact I know I shouldn't; but that doesn't seem to keep me from bumpin' this delightfully ignorant track. The Rich Kids, another one of ATL's finest...or not so fine depending how you choose to look at it, are taking the streets by storm with this Swaggerific classic. My favorite line of the song is "futuristic kush make the hoes think I farted". Ladies in gentlemen that is pure unadulterated talent! I mean not only do you have to read at least a 3rd grade level, but you have to buy such high grade weed that it smells like ass when you spark it up. Enough of my thoughts, let's all hold hands and embrace this ignorance. Things this ridiculous need to be embraced, as they remind us not to take life so seriously. They also show us that no matter how dumb we think we are, there is always someone behind us, in the idiots marathon of life. In their defense, they are just high school kids. If y'all heard some of the stuff I was spitting when I was 18, you would laugh your ass off too. GTD and L.E.G STAND UP!! click the link and check it out. Listen to WASSSSSUUUUP here

SMKA interview on AREA84
"SMKA was formed in August 2008 and is composed of Atlanta native producer Blake “808 Blake” German, guitar player/engineer/producer Kyle “7King” King, and business manager Mike Walbert.
How is the SMKA crew today? This week? This month? This year?
I’m doing lovely actually, I mean there’s always some bull shit to deal with, but for the most part I am enjoying every second I have.
Wanna give a shoutout? Give some recognition?
Uh, I guess I’ll shout out the homies Motion Family for the Vid, and all my dudes from the A…Also want everyone to be on the lookout for new projects from A. Leon Craft and Young T.R.I.M.M.
What does the acronym “SMKA” represent?
If I told ya I’d have to Kill ya haha nah Super Market Knife Attack (Don’t ask me Why just go w/ it).
Each production team has their trademark “sound” how would you describe yours collectively?
As far as a trademark i guess It would be that hard hitting 808, but I also don’t believe in doing just one type of sound my goal is to be able to flow through different genres of music, so the more you can’t tell it’s our production the better.
Let’s talk about some of the featured artists in your latest release. How do the following fit into your overall flow?
These artist each represent a crazy sense of creativeness, which allows us to push the envelope with our sound, working with each of them is exciting because they all share an open mind from a musical standpoint.
What does your crown and serpent symbol represent?
The Crown is part of the 7King Mystique or whatever and the “serpent” well Myself, Kyle and Mike all went to high school together and our mascot was a python haha…sorry we didn’t really get to deep on that one .
Explain to us “The 808 experience…-ence…-ence”.
Basically amoeba music is our ability to not be clearly defined in one sound (Science lesson: An amoeba is a shapeless organism) I mean like I talked about earlier it’s not being pigeon held in one genre rather the ability to experiment with all types of sounds. For instance I have been heavy into making alot of alternative and somewhat punk beats as of late, which is a clear difference from the beats used on the 808 Experiment.
In an interview with Roll Out, they highlighted the phrase “amoeba music” can you indulge us with the meaning of that phrase?
We are looking at your video “Caddy’s”. Tells the readers what were you trying to do with the sound in this joint? What are you trying to envoke?
I mean Caddy’s is basically meant for you to be riding on top of your old chevy impala and just lose it. This song took me back to high school when you basically don’t really give a fuck and everyone is outside partying and stunting in there old ass cars. Its kinda like ode to my southern roots i guess.
In ten years where do you see yourselves?
10 years from now shit I hope to have blurred the lines between what is considered hip hop …. as well as revolutionize a new sound using robots and shit haha.
Random: Do you guys ever take a vacation?
I mean at this point in my career I can’t really afford to take a vacation because there is always someone working."

The Roots and Jimmy Fallon Break My Heart
"The principles of true hip hop have been forsaken, its all contractual and about money making" - Black Thought
Before I begin let me start by saying that by no means am I throwing darts at The Roots! That's damn near blasphemous. However, seeing them as a late night TV house band, for a dude that has barely made me smirk in the last 8 years, pains me more than words can express. It's like watching Jordan play for the Wizards. Sure he can still hoop, but the uniform? the city? It just don't feel right. The Roots aren't just hip-hop. They are soul, they are funk, they are rock and roll, they are music. Listening to any Roots album, I don't care which one, is a mind altering experience; and as for seeing them live...well that's witnessing artistry and showmanship in their purest forms. So how did these icons wind up as a house band for a late night talk show?
Ladies and gentlemen it's simple...Money, and before you call them sell outs, you better recognize the grind they have been on for a decade plus. I've seen a lot of dope acts in concert, but I must say the roots are right up there at the top. Instead of the live instrumentation bleeding over the witty, thought provoking, verbal daggers wielded by the front man, they blend together harmoniously. Giving life to such immaculate tapestries such as "The Tipping Point", "Illadelph Halflife", and "Do You Want More" to name a few. Despite what I consider to be one of the most impressive catalogs in music history (not just hip-hop), the sales just weren't there. Constantly touring, coupled with lack of respect grows old. That grind begins to takes it's toll both mentally and physically. With all do respect, how is it that Wayne sells more than The Roots? put Black Thought in a cypher with Wayne, and it will be like watching a juiced up Barry Bonds, taking his turn at the plate at your nephew's tee ball game. Some might attribute it to "swag", I attribute it to marketing.
The music business exemplifies just what the name explicitly states, its a business, and a dirty one at that. With no real push, no real concerted effort, how can you expect even the most talented acts to do any significant numbers? Then came the deal with Def Jam, the deal that made not only the group, but their adoring, loyal fans rejoice. Finally they were going to get those oh so needed marketing dollars behind them, finally we were going to see them get the respect they deserve, bigger and brighter things we on the horizon. Unfortunately, Mr. Carter was running things, which meant unless you were singing about umbrellas, you got no love. So who can blame them for going to Jimmy Fallon's show? They get to shoot during the day, be close to home, and reportedly make more per episode than they did for a whole week of touring.
As I have stated before (unless speaking about Kanye) I will NEVER knock another man's hustle. Nevertheless, I wish things could have been different. Earlier I said I felt their catalog was complete, however as I write this I realize I am wrong. Part of what makes groups like The Roots, De La Soul, And Tribe (when they were around) so influential, is that they are timeless. People never grow old of them because they keep evolving, while simultaneously never forgetting what they are about. The Roots could make music for the next 70 years and I would never grow tired of it, and each album would present something different I had never heard from them before. While I am happy for them, I must admit I am heart broken as well. Soulja Boy said hip-hop died because Nas said so. I would argue that hip-hop isn't dead, but changed forever, when the art took a backseat to the persona. When the rhyme took a back seat to the number of diamonds in a chain. When substance took a back seat to "swag". The question is not whether or not Hip-Hop will live forever, the question is what state will it be in? As long as we the fans, don't demand that real music is made, as long as we the fans choose not to demarcate a space for acts like The Roots to not only exist, but to thrive, we will be stuck where we are now. Watching our most talented icons, working as the back drop on late night television. I don't know how that sits with you, but I simply can't stand it.

Caddys Video on FADER.com
"Totally out of nowhere comes this video for the SMKA-produced "Caddys," featuring relative newcomers Gripplyaz, Young Trimm and Backwudz associate A. Leon Craft. Some research shows us that Gripplyaz is overly worried about being labeled a hipster rapper, and that, coupled with Young Trimm's excellent if somewhat Lil Wayne-influenced verse and A. Leon Craft's self-conscious weirdness, means these guys could fall into some serious internet navel-gazing. But this song works so well and comes off so breezy and effortless that we don't think they have anything to worry about."

Women are a great asset to man as friends and as lovers. I’ve slowed down now lol. Gift of gab was a fun trip down memory lane.”

Dikembe Mutombo: Paying Respect Where It's Due
This ain't got a damn thing to do with music, but I think it needs to be said. For those who don't know, NBA player (former all-star) and all-time great humanitarian Dikembe Mutumbo got hurt in a playoff game against the Portland Trail Blazers last night. The injury looks pretty bad, and sadly looks to be the end to a career that for all intents and purposes should have ended a long time ago. In his defense, Dikembe was still playing not because he was still leading the league in blocks at his ripe old age of 40 plus, but because he truly loved what he was doing. You add his passion for the sport to the AMAZING work his has done in the Congo, and he makes all these other athletes look like spoiled prima donna's, who are truly undeserving of the respect and admiration they receive. On a personal note, I got " Mount Mutombo's" autograph at Macy's in Lenox Mall back when he first came to the Hawks. Dude was buying his son some draws or something. I was like "that looks like Dikembe Mutombo!"...F your son and this uber personal and slightly awkward moment you are signing something for ya boy. He can get whitey tidy's any time, I don't meet NBA all-stars everyday. I got some paper from a cashier, and the large African giant signed my paper with a smile on his face. That smile quickly disappeared when I returned with three other people (female Macy's employees) who were too scared to ask for his autograph on their own. He was like " I sign for him already, I sign for your son!". I was like "chill 55, and take that base out of your voice when you speak to me". Well maybe I didn't say that exactly, but as I get older the story evolves. By time I'm 50, it will probably end with me donkey punching Mutombo into a Tommy Hilfiger display, then taking his place on the Hawks that night; Notching a quadruple double off the bench, and monkey poking a vicious two handed, reverse, 360, between the legs, wind mill slam all up in Karl Malone's grill. Needless to say it was a memorable experience, and I am sure I am not the only one with a good story to tell about one of the games all time great guys. Shout out to the big fella

Dopest Thing I've seen all day...besides myself in the mirror
Nyle "Let The Beat Build" from Nyle on Vimeo.
HOW CREATIVE WAS THAT!
This guy Nyle is about as good a rapper as I am a lion tamer, but the rest of the kids in the video make this more than worth watching. The musicians are genius, and so is the film crew. It was also good to see such a diverse group of people getting down on something positive. This rainbow coalition of rap should be very pleased with themselves. Growing up I loved the movie I'm gonna get you sucka, and always thought it would be cool to walk down the streets with my own theme music playing. But this cat got white chicks with Banjos! that shits on anything I ever dreamed of. Now I want me a banjo playing white girl of my own. Maybe Obama can throw that in the next stimulus package.

b.o.b. & TI - I'm Dat Nigga
Not a new song...but just getting everybody out there familiar with just how fire b.o.b is. He has spent the last couple weeks in the studio with his band (SMKA) and is really making some amazing music... just don't expect a whole lot of rapping out of this musician.

Pepsi Mic Pass - B.o.b & Eastsiders, blu, talib, mista fab, freeway, pac div, the knux
What they wont tell you about this Pepsi Mic Pass is that Kyle King and Ali (the DRUMMER) re-made the beat completely. They will never see a cent for it, but the beat was kind of wack until they got on it and re-did the drums, guitar and made it more instrumental.
Big ups to Bobby Ray and the Eastsiders....and all the other dope MC's on this.
Pepsi = Wack
All the MC's on this = Dope
